Connection to the outdoors/nature is increasingly prioritized by homeowners, so much so that outdoor living will soon be architectural designers’ second largest consideration when designing homes, after cost, according to the December Survey Insights Report by John Burns Real Estate Consulting. More than ever, homeowners are valuing outdoor gathering areas designed for privacy instead of one large yard, as well as year-round outdoor entertainment spaces.

Key findings reveal a growing desire for indoor/outdoor design to extend the home for resale value, and homeowners are also looking to ditch the standard lawn and pool to instead integrate their hobbies and self-expression into low-maintenance landscaping.

Outdoor entertaining has increased the demand for entertainment spaces that work all year long, even in seasonal markets. Include shade structures, screens, and temperature control outside (e.g., ceiling fans) to increase the prominence of outdoor rooms across the nation.

Homeowners understand the health benefits of being outside and want to reap these benefits throughout the year. Families consider their personal health along with their children’s health.

Make the outdoors feel like the indoors by seamlessly carrying functions (e.g., entertainment), features (e.g., Wi-Fi connection), design aesthetic, and even materials from inside to out.
