According to NAHB, the median single-family square floor area was 2,388 square feet as of the second quarter, a decrease from earlier this year. The average square footage of a home also declined, down to 2,616 square feet

This may indicate that builders, who previously focused on higher-end homes for more affluent buyers after the recession, are now starting to shift toward constructing starter homes for younger buyers.

In contrast to single-family patterns, new multifamily apartment size is down compared to the pre-recession period. This is due to the weak for-sale multifamily market and strength for rental demand.
