A New Light Fixture That Illuminates and Sanitizes Interiors

Italian lighting brand OLEV has introduced a new light fixture that sanitizes interiors to ensure the safety and well-being of occupants.

Pure BioAir is an LED ceiling fixture that exploits the bactericidal power of UV-C light, which the company says is effective in counteracting the spread of viruses, bacteria, and pathogenic microorganisms. The product ideally suited to community settings or opening plan environments (such as offices and workplaces), as it illuminates workstations while also ensuring enhanced visual comfort for computer users.

“Unlike common germicidal lamps, OLEV’s Pure BioAir has been designed to completely conceal the UV-C source,” the company says. “This was a very specific decision taken after analyzing scientific research that shows how direct exposure to UV-C rays without specific precautions can cause irreversible damage to eyes and skin.”

Pure BioAir channels air within its body, filtering it through an integrated UV-C light source hidden inside the light’s housing. To offer the maximum degree of protection, the light is hidden from view and occupants are completely shielded from it.

As the company explains it, the strength of the technology used in the light enables it to achieve a level of germicidal efficiency equal to 79%, which means that over an 8-hour period, Pure BioAir can filter all the air within a 1,059-cubic-foot space. “Also the surface treatment used has been carefully studied: the paint is protected by a transparent anti-bacterial film based on micro-encapsulated silver ions, providing effective protection against 99.99% of germs and bacteria,” the company adds.

Pure BioAir uses an LED light source to illuminate the environment. Offering a high color output, it produces a beam of light that is aimed downwards and can be supplied with ultra-dark lamellar screens that eliminate glare from any direction you look at it, guaranteeing a Unified Glare Rating—the measure of glare from light sources—of less than 19.

To enhance the sanitizing action and achieve optimal air quality, Pure BioAir can be supplied with a green Tillandsia, a special smog-eating plant that absorbs polluting particles: it’s totally autonomous, requires no care, doesn’t grow in soil, and gets all the nutrients it needs exclusively from the moisture in the surrounding environment, the company says. The small plant enhances the sanitizing action of the lamp by absorbing polluting particles present within the interior.

The unit measures 44 inches long and almost 3½ inches tall. It comes in a variety of finishes, including Matt White, Matt Black, Rich Gold, Titanium, and Pink Copper.

OLEV was founded in 2014 by lighting industry entrepreneur Andrea Lanaro and was created to address a hole in the market. “At the time, most manufacturers were using LED technology for industrial lighting,” the company explains. “Olev was the first brand to launch a full range of LED-based decorative lamps.”

All Olev’s lights are made in Italy.
