Picks From Your Peers: 3 Kitchen Picks from Joel Contreras
When Joel Contreras designs new homes and remodels, the layout almost always revolves around the kitchen. And nearly as often, that kitchen exudes a contemporary vibe. This includes the crisp edges and clean lines of a Carrara marble countertop with a waterfall edge or unfussy backsplashes in classic subway tile. “I love contrast,” notes Contreras, designer and project manager for Contramark Kitchens. “I love having white on black or white on charcoal.” The designer balances the cooler tones with woods and warmer metallics; lately, he’s been drawn to American walnut for its clean, consistent grain.
Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances tick a couple of boxes for Contreras, including a sleek look, high quality, and proven performance. “One thing I like is brand recognition,” he says. “They have the reputation. Their names are often all you have to say to clients.” subzero-wolf.com

Pendants from Tom Dixon enhance Contreras’ modern designs, either in coordinating black or charcoal or with a pop of brass, gold, or copper. The Copper Round pendant, shown here in a Contramark remodeling project in Phoenix, measures 45 centimeters in diameter, and offers a highly reflective surface and a warm metallic glow. tomdixon.net
Matte black finishes, such as on Brizo’s Solna kitchen faucet, fit expertly with Contreras’ current design approaches. This single-handle pull-down faucet features tap-on/tap-off functionality. brizo.com
