A residential duplex in Edmonton, Alberta constructed by Habitat for Humanity featuring precast concrete construction has achieved net zero energy status. The building benefits from concrete’s ability to retain thermal mass. Precast panels have an insulation rating of R44 for the walls, and R88 for the roof, about three times the insulation of a typical home. The structure produces its own heat and hot water with a geothermal system, and photovoltaic panels provide electricity. Over the next two years, researchers from MIT will monitor the home’s energy performance.
