Formosa 1140 is a striking West Hollywood, Calif., condo building that cuts a dashing figure. To create a bright and durable exterior, architect Lorcan O’Herlihy, FAIA, chose custom corrugated panels from Metal Sales Manufacturing Corp. in Louisville, Ky.
“Metal Sales embraced our design, creating a nonstandard wall panel just for this project,” says O’Herlihy, principal of his eponymous firm in Culver City, Calif. “The striking nature of the panel, with added benefits of durability, recyclability, and shading, creates a smart, stand-out building exterior.”
The architect chose 12,900 square feet of the manufacturer’s perforated T16-E metal panels. Measuring 36 inches wide, the panels feature crisp 90-degree vertical box ribs with 4-inch centers and exposed fasteners. The contractors installed the panels in a multi-layered checkerboard pattern.

“Offering highly customizable profiles, the product can be made of stainless steel, copper, or aluminum with multiple finishing options,” the company says. In this case, the installers cut the panels into rectangular segments with squared-off edges, “giving the building its sharply linear quality.”
The architects selected a custom PVDF Kynar 500 finish in Coronado Red and Raucous Orange, creating a durable, sustainable, and heat-reflective façade that is critical for the region’s warm climate.
