Beauty has a direct impact on the brain and our overall well-being, making interior design an important asset to consider when developing a housing community. Multi-Housing News spoke with Mary Cook, founder of interior design firm Mary Cook Associates, to understand how interiors can influence the happiness and comfort of homeowners. According to Cook, whether it's better lighting or a well-planned room layout, recognizing beauty triggers neurological activity that brings a sense of calm to residents.

The brain releases serotonin and dopamine, two primary hormones, when beauty is perceived. Serotonin influences positive moods and feelings, while dopamine inspires and motivates. When people experience beautiful interiors, these ‘feel-good’ hormones foster elevated moods, a sense of calm and lowered heart rate along with increased productivity and functionality.
