Great Green: Prefab-ulous Green

Haven Custom Homes takes modular green building a step further.
Sept. 1, 2008

Haven's Marion model at Hunley Waters is green, prefabricated and attractive. Photo: Jason Watts Modular is increasingly recognized as a green way to build because the factory built process saves time and energy. Linthicum, Md.-based modular builder Haven Custom Homes has taken prefab green a step further, completing its first set of EarthCraft (the Atlanta-based green building program that has become a standard in many areas of the Southeast) and Energy Star-certified custom homes in North Charleston, S.C.

Located in the community of Hunley Waters, the homes were constructed at Haven's facility in South Carolina. The Marion model, shown here, is a three-bedroom 2 1/2 bathroom home of 1,971 square feet. It features high-performance windows; tight construction and ducts; and efficient HVAC, lighting and appliances. The homes were designed by Charleston, S.C.-based Beau Clowney Design and built in conjunction with Old Man Construction, also of Charleston. The community was developed by Cobalt.
