Older homeowners want to live out their lives in their homes, but this is not a reality for many of them. A recent survey from home equity investment company Point shows 84% of older Americans consider aging in place a priority. Additionally, 58% say it is extremely important to them. Despite this desire to live out their lives in their homes, most adults find that their current homes don't serve their needs. In addition to safety concerns, 53% of older adults also report concerns about maintenance and repair costs as well as property taxes and other daily living costs.

According to the research results, nearly half of homeowners estimate it would cost over $20,000 to adequately prepare their homes to age in place, with one in 10 believing it will cost over $100,000.

While preparing a home to age in place can vary widely, it is significantly more affordable than other long-term care options for many. In-home care for part-time assistance averages $21,600 annually, compared to $54,000 for assisted living and more than $116,000 for a private room in a nursing home. Read more
