Single Women Lead the Way Among Young Homebuyers

Compared with other generations, single women in Gen Z make up the highest share of homebuyers

With high mortgage rates and climbing home prices, buying a home in today’s market can be a challenge, but single women are making it work. According to recent data from the National Association of Realtors’ 2025 Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends Report, young women are taking up a significant portion of real estate compared with other demographics. While making up just 3% of the market, Generation Z has the largest number of single-woman homebuyers at 30%. Additionally, 15% of younger Millennial buyers are single women. Comparatively, 27% of Baby Boomers were single women.

There is an interesting trend among single female home buyers across different generations: Both younger and older single female buyers tended to prefer smaller homes, such as townhouses, apartments, and condos. These types of homes are often more affordable than single-family houses, making them attractive to younger buyers like Gen Z, who are early in their careers and may have limited financial resources.
