Solar Decathlon Team Designs ‘E-Mailable’ Home
Students from South Carolina’s Clemson University designed and built a house that “exists largely as a set of digital files,” Inhabitat reports.
The house is their entry in the 2015 Solar Decathlon, organized by the U.S. Department of Energy. Called Indigo Pine, the prototype was constructed with CNC-milled plywood and has rooftop solar panels that power the home in its entirety. Templates saved in digital format means the home’s design can be emailed to allow the average person to build their own house using local materials.
“The assembled result is a 970-square-foot three-bedroom home with one-and-a-half baths, a large common space, and a front porch,” Inhabitat reports, adding that team members say Southern hospitality was their source of inspiration.
