A majority of Western states had nearly 5 percent of their population moving into their state from the previous year, and Washington, D.C. had 8.7 percent.

States in the western U.S. in particular are seeing large increases in population from American migration. While 9 states had 4.0 - 8.7 percent of their populations moving in since 2016, fifteen states were close behind with 3.0-3.9 percent. Those 15 states were largely in the West and Southeast regions, per Business Insider.

The U.S. Census Bureau's "American Community Survey" asks a set of questions about economics, demographics, social characteristics, and housing to about 1 percent of the US population each year. Among the many topics on the survey, respondents are asked whether they moved houses in the previous year and, if so, where their previous house was.
