U.S. News and World Report has released its 2019 ranking of the best places in the U.S. to retire, and while Florida and Texas had some of the best, they didn't capture the top spot.

Lancaster, Penn. was number one in the nation for retirees, according to U.S. News and World Report. With a 9.3 score in health care, 6.7 in housing affordability, and 7.5 overall score, The Red Rose City offers its 533,110 residents of various ages and professions both rural and suburban environments. The median home price in Lancaster is $179,408, and the median monthly rent is $932. Lancaster's climate is also agreeable, with an average high temperature of 61.9°, and average low of 42.3°. The report says, "Lancaster offers a better value than similarly sized metro areas when you compare housing costs to median household income."

Lancaster County's rolling farmland may be a draw for residents, but all those farm animals do bring a specific odor to the area's air. Meanwhile, the local Kellogg's plant, Mars Chocolate North America and the world's largest chicken barbecue add their own aromas to the mix. Though new residents will surely take notice at first, this unique smell eventually becomes the smell of home.
