Homeowners are holding on to their homes, with just 19% saying they plan to sell in the next three years, according to data from real estate marketing platform Zillow. This is the first time that this percentage has dropped below 20% in the last two years. However, the number of homeowners with no plans to sell at all has declined in the past several years. As of Q4 2024, 42% of homeowners had no plans to sell, compared with Q1 2021, when 56% of homeowners announced plans to never sell their homes.
The proportion of selling-intentioned homeowners has fluctuated quarter to quarter since 2021, though the South has seen a gradual increase of selling intentions over four years. This December 2024, 21% of Southern homeowners plan to sell in the next three years, 20 % of Northeastern homeowners, 19% of Western homeowners, and 14% of those in the Midwest.
