Tension mounts in San Francisco, Chicago over affordable housing efforts
Lack of affordable housing means lengthy commutes for workers of modest means

San Francisco area residents recently threatened to sue suburban communities over a lack of affordable housing. In greater Chicago, a proposal by a church to build affordable housing units in a wealthy suburb generated passionate opposition.
Both are examples of the difficulty of getting affordable housing built in suburban areas. The lack of housing for those of modest means cause some workers to have lengthy commutes that create an environmental cost.
