National Renewable Energy Lab studies how a smart home links to the grid

The Naitonal Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado is examining a new way that woudl allow home appliances to communicate with the power grid using an Internet connection.

Engineers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., are looking at how smart home appliances can communicate with the power grid through the Internet. The goal is to study how appliances can interface with, say, an electric vehicle in the garage and a solar PV system on the roof. The program focuses how homes can use renewable energy without significantly disrupting the grid.
