More Residential Solar Customers Now Buy Rather Than Lease

In the last quarter of 2016, only 47 percent of all new residential solar installed was third-party owned

In the fourth quarter of 2016, the residential solar market shifted from majority lease agreements to majority purchase agreements. It marks a big shift in the market from just a couple of years ago when leased solar panels comprised 72% of the market. In the last quarter of 2016, just 47% of all new residential solar installed was third-party owned. This year is projected to be the first full year since 2011 in which less than half of new residential solar installed is third-party owned.
