SBCA-Led Partnership Builds Home in Record Time at Innovation Housing Showcase
The Structural Building Components Association (SBCA), in collaboration with 84 Lumber and the National Framers Council, showcased a new home construction model at the Innovative Housing Showcase held from June 7 to 9 in Washington, D.C. The team constructed a two-story, 2,400-square-foot house on the National Mall in less than 8 hours. The structural framing elements—including windows and doors—and the crew were provided by 84 Lumber, which will also transfer the home after the event to its permanent location in Waynesboro, Va., as a donation to Habitat for Humanity.
This year's event also featured several new developments compared with the team’s build at last year’s event. The installation of HVAC mechanicals, electrical, and plumbing in open-web floor trusses, which speeds up installation, reduces field errors, and lowers costs, ultimately shaved 4 hours off the build time for this year’s home
“This eight-hour build isn’t just some race to the finish or attention-grabbing gimmick,” said Ken Kucera, VP of installed sales and manufacturing at 84 Lumber. “The build represents the efficiencies of current component manufacturing and installation methods. This makes installation at the job site so much faster and helps the builder’s bottom line and ability to provide quality housing solutions.”
