Designing a kitchen that remains practical and appealing as a homeowner ages involves balancing safety, functionality, ease of use, and aesthetics. And kitchens that accommodate changing needs over time can still have plenty of character. According to design and remodeling platform Houzz, designers can create beautiful kitchens for aging in place by considering the height of appliances, adding lower storage, implementing no-touch smart technology, and more.

“We are frequently considering how things will work in 20 years’ time and all that’s in between,” says designer Steve Root of Roots Kitchens, Bedrooms and Bathrooms. “That means thinking about how the homeowners’ needs might change, how lifestyles may develop, how things will wear and break and, thus, how they can be maintained.” Read more
