How to Better Blend Indoor-Outdoor Living

Follow these simple tips to enhance a home's indoor-outdoor connection

Outdoor spaces are traditionally set behind the home, making them somewhat easy to ignore. However, there are many ways outdoor spaces can be incorporated into the design of a home, creating a feeling that the home's interior extends to the outside. According to design and remodeling platform Houzz, some ways you can enhance indoor-outdoor connection so a home’s outdoor space functions as one with the interior of the home include: using the same or similar flooring throughout, using glass bifold doors for a better view to the outside, using similar houseplants and outdoor plants, and more.

“The [outdoor] area immediately adjacent to the house is a really important space for designing a successful [landscape],” says Peter Reader of Peter Reader Landscapes. “It marks the transition from inside to outside and has to welcome and draw you into the [yard].” Creating interest and a clear link between the spaces is key, he says, and adds that these outdoor areas often serve as patios for sitting, eating and entertaining.
