A retired couple from Portland, Ore., looked to the Texas Hill Country to be closer to their children and grandchildren, eventually combining two, five-acre parcels on the edge of Cordillera Ranch, a luxury-home golf community northwest of San Antonio.

The property includes a barn and a two-bedroom detached guest house, with the main home atop the hill to take in unobstructed views to the west. “From the onset, a transparent connection to the outdoors was embraced in the site,” says local architect Craig McMahon, whose floor plan placed the main living spaces at the highest point of the property, while flanking bedroom wings gently step down the hillside. “It’s a great blending of the home to the site,” commented one judge.

To optimize its placement, the main living area features 10-foot-tall glass doors that engage the adjacent patio and central courtyard. A glass bridge leads to the master suite, itself enclosed in glass on three sides. “I really like the layout around the courtyard flowing through the main living space,” said another judge.

Linear natural limestone clads the exterior walls with smooth troweled stucco, pewter colored metal siding, and stained wood eaves, all reflecting the German influence on Texas buildings of the past. —Camilla McLaughlin
