More women are entering the construction industry than ever before, but the male-dominated field still presents a number of challenges for women, especially those interested in leadership positions. As a female leader in the space—and one of a few women working in green construction—Andrea Mancino spoke with Multi-Housing News about the challenges and opportunities she's faced in her journey to becoming a successful leader in the construction industry.
Mancino began her career at New York City-based energy solutions firm Bright Power as an intern more than a decade ago. Over the years, she took on responsibilities in team management, operations, business strategy, and client relations, ultimately becoming the company’s CEO in 2023.
"The gratification of working in the green building and energy efficiency sector is unmatched, especially for a mission-driven person who cares about how their work fits into the bigger picture of making the world a better place. It is also constantly evolving, and there are still many uphill battles. We are building the plane as we are flying it, so to speak.
This is the case for everyone, but also being a woman in construction adds more complexity. Remember that we are used to adversity, challenges, adaptation, persistence and problem-solving.
