The NAHB found that though single-family homes have generally gotten larger, the Census Bureau found that the median lot size of a new single-family detached home was getting smaller – the median lot size of a new single-family detached home sold was an even 10,000 square feet from 1992 through 1995, and slowly drifted down until it reached 8,833 square feet in 2004. To help readers better visualize the sizes, a football field was used for comparison.
