Architecture students at Alabama’s Auburn University have been fine-tuning designs for low-cost housing through the Rural Studio program for over a decade, CityLab reports.
Participants in the program have developed designs for 16 iterations of a $20,000 home, and the studio is getting ready to bring some of the plans to the market. This price target is based on the smallest loan amount that a person living on Social Security could afford through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Section 502 rural housing loan program.
