Building codes that are adapted to address severe weather events are among the chief trends impacting the roofing industry. State and local governments are promoting more robust, weather-resistant and efficient roof systems in code updates.

For example, building code requirements in South Florida have long mandated roof systems that stand up to high winds. California’s Title 24, Part 6 building-efficiency standards require solar-reflective shingles to help minimize homes’ energy use. California also provides rebates to homeowners and incentives to building owners to install cool roof shingles.

Insurance companies are also exerting influence. They are establishing standards on how often roof systems are replaced, the types of roofing products installed, and how roofing materials are installed.
