Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen has revived designer Poul Henningsen’s most notable pendants and will release them this fall.

Both the PH Septima and PH 5 pendant lights will receive a facelift to update the products with modern materials and finishes while retaining their well-known silhouettes.

Henningsen gained fame through his lighting fixture designs, an area of design he thrived in after dabbling with architecture at the beginning of his career. Louis Poulsen and Henningsen began their working relationship in 1925, and he became the first editor of the company’s magazine. The designer’s focus on the relationship between structures, shadows, glare, and human’s need for light are still practiced by Louis Poulsen today, the company says.

In 1928, Henningsen debuted the PH Septima at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art—now known as the Danish Museum of Art & Design—to an excitable crowd, yet its production came to a halt in the 1940s due to a shortage of materials. The PH Septima is still regarded as one of Henningsen’s most refined pendants, the company says.

PH Septima’s design strikes a balance between organic and ultra-modern design. The pendant’s seven shades appear to be blooming, at the same time featuring alternating glass details and strong lines. Each shade has frosted and clear sections, which help to diffuse light, the company says. In addition, the lighting fixture is glare-free.

The latest version will feature shades produced in Italian borosilicate glass, a durable yet delicate material. Borosilicate glass contains more boron trioxide, making it extremely temperature-resistant and more resistant to chemicals.

Louis Poulsen has added brass to the PH Septima in its suspension, canopy, and arms. The company says this is to complement the pendant’s softness.

Years after PH Septima entered the lighting world, Henningsen designed the PH 5 pendant in 1958. The PH 5 and PH 5 Mini will now be rereleased in ultra-saturated, matte finishes.

PH 5 did not come from a normal design process, but as a response to the constant changes of bulbs by manufacturers at the time. Henningsen became quite irritated with these changes and designed PH 5 to work with any kind of light source, the company says.

In order to move the PH 5 into the 21st century, the company will offer white, black, and bright blue finishes. The company chose these colors to best enhance the original design and its minimalistic, modern look, the company says. Each shade of the light contains white inner sides to best reflect light.

Just like its Septima counterpart, the PH 5 and PH 5 Mini will offer soft, glare-free light.

The PH 5’s top shade measures 19.5 inches in diameter and the Mini measures 11.8 inches in diameter.

PH 5 Monochromatic line will be available in September and PH Septima will release later this fall.
