In a recent survey from exterior building products manufacturer Alside, American homeowners revealed their color preference for updating their home exteriors in 2024. And with 16% of respondents agreeing, off-white/cream emerged as the top choice. This marks the second consecutive year that off-white/cream has claimed the number one spot. Furthermore, the survey found that 40% of homeowners would opt for a neutral color if they were considering an exterior update in 2024.

"Exterior color trends have always played a significant role in home improvement projects, and it's no surprise that homeowners are looking to refresh the exterior of their homes with a color that stands the test of time," commented Chase Creighton, Alside Business Director for Vinyl & Composite Cladding. "Off-white/cream provides a perfect blend of elegance, versatility, and modern appeal that complements various architectural styles, making it a top choice for homeowners across the country."

Breakdown of Color Preference

The survey, which polled approximately 1,500 American homeowners, revealed the following top color preferences for updating home exteriors in 2024.

In addition to color preference, homeowners also weighed other factors when selecting their home's exterior color, including cost (35%), availability (23%), and the influence of their spouse or significant other (21%). Notably, 20% of respondents admitted their choice might be inspired by something they saw in a magazine or on a home improvement show. It's interesting to note that while men and women generally responded similarly in their selection criteria, 29% of men cited their spouse or significant other's input as a deciding factor, compared to 14% of women.

Window Colors

The survey also delved into homeowners' preferences for exterior window colors. Notably, white emerged as the overwhelmingly popular choice, with 36% of respondents indicating a preference for white window frames in case of an update in 2024.

When it came to choosing window colors, respondents had three equally ranked priorities: selecting a color that provides a contrast to the rest of the home, matches the exterior, and considers costs. Availability followed at 21%. Meeting homeowner association or local guidelines (18%), basing the choice on something seen in a magazine or on a home improvement show (17%), and deferring the decision to their spouse or significant other (16%) were also significant considerations.mes.
