House Design Tips That Separate Timeless From Trendy

When it comes to designing homes, finding elements that are timeless rather than trendy can seem like a shot in the dark with so many style options and opinions from builders, designers, and homeowners alike. According to Housing Design Matters, a list of criteria must first be addressed to distinguish that fine line and determine what features will stand the test of time. Utilizing a variety of architectural styles with different roof forms, colors, finishes, and materials avoids a cookie-cutter community and gives house hunters an array of options.

Creating a legacy streetscape is an easy way to capture a home’s timeless qualities that will invite generations of homeowners through its doors, from spacious front porches to lush landscaping.

For me, “timeless” starts with the architectural styles. I like at least 4 or 5 different styles – even if you’re going to limit each plan to 3 styles. With this approach, you can add diversity without overextending your architectural budget. You may want to consider a fourth style for the model – since everyone wants the model. Make sure the different styles create vastly different roof forms and massing.

Can you create two elevations so different that no one will believe it is the same house? When we shared an example of this with our community group, we were accused of lying!
