U.S.-based The Hudson Company has formed a strategic partnership with the German millwork specialist Schotten & Hansen to offer a collection of high-end flooring.
“The partnership with Schotten & Hansen came as we share a mutual respect for craftsmanship, artisan-made materials, sustainability, and natural beauty,” says Jamie Hammel, president of The Hudson Company. “With the Schotten & Hansen collections, we will be to able to provide designers and architects in the U.S. with an even wider range of aesthetic choices for their interiors, from contract projects to residential designs.”

Founded in 1995, The Hudson Company manufactures its products in New York’s Hudson Valley. The company says products are handmade and custom milled from premium hardwoods and includes flooring, paneling, and beams. Executives say the partnership is a perfect fit with Schotten & Hansen, a German producer of wood products, including flooring, paneling, steps, veneers, and doors.
Sourced responsibly from a range of European woodlands including the Black Forest of Germany, Schotten utilizes entire tree trunks to preserve the natural characteristics of trees, a cue taken from the Japanese methodology of Wabi Sabi, which appreciates mother nature’s beauty, unique characteristics, and quirks. The Hudson Company says in a release announcing the partnership. The products are rid of harmful chemical solvents and finished with natural materials, such as waxes (beeswax, candelilla wax, shellac wax), oils (linseed oil, perilla oil, walnut oil), and resins (copal, shellac, colophony).

“By partnering with Schotten & Hansen, The Hudson Company expands its mission to provide the highest-quality woods to market, adding new treatments, species, 20 standard colorations and the ability to customize,” the company says.
Set to launch in spring 2020, the integrated collection includes European oak-engineered flooring in 10 finishes. The company says the wood is responsibly sourced from French and German forests where the “cool climate and rich soil yield wood with light brown tones and subtle, fine grain.” During processing, open knots are filled by hand with end grain or a stone-resin composite before color application, using only materials found in nature such as beeswax, minerals, and oils, the company adds.

Boards measure ¾-inches thick, 6-to-4 inches wide, and 10-feet to 16-feet longer. Each plank has a light character grade, double end groove, and a micro-beveled edge. Finishes include Black Cherry, Black Olive, and Dark Clay.
“As this partnership widens the brand’s scope for high-end and custom projects, The Hudson Company recently expanded its mid-range collections as well, allowing it to more widely serve its base of interior designers and consumers who trust the integrity of material and milling that the company offers,” the brand says.
Flooring products in the new collection can be found at the company’s three showrooms in Manhattan, Ridgefield, Conn., and Pine Plains, N.Y. Designers and architects can get quotes and purchase the collection online at thehudsonco.com.
