Watch Hardcore Renos Build a Deck on Metal Piers

April 30, 2020

General contractor Manny Neves shares how his team at Hardcore Renos built a deck on a metal pier system instead of traditional wooden posts.

Neves worked with Techno Metal Post, which designs and manufactures helical piers and specialized installation machinery for permanent and temporary support work, to install a deck on a pier behind a home. Though most of the project went smoothly, Neves did encounter old concrete in the ground where the team was drilling. Using the right pile driver ensured that the hidden rubble did not slow down the project.

“The pile went like butter right through the first one … Fourth one had a little bit of old concrete, old pavement from way back when,” Neves says. “Whatever it was, it was like four or five inches down, but the machine just kept on drilling, broke it. Went right around it. You got everything all within an eighth of an inch long.”

Today's Techno Metal Post day, we're dealing with the deck that's off the back of the house off on the main floor of the kitchen. Roger texted me 5:30 in the morning. He knows I wake up at five o'clock in the morning so he beat the traffic and got here and he was chilling out, and he was saying a little bit of runners.I got here at some o'clock. His boys got here at 8:30 off loaded everything, brought the machine in.

We marked everything: Was all set 16 inch off this wall, three feet off the back of the house to the second roll.

The right tools for the job

The pile went like butter right through the first one. It was like less than two minutes. Second one, butter, in two minutes. Third one, butter. Fourth one had a little bit of concrete, old, old concrete, old, old pavement from way back when. Whatever it was, like four five inches down, but the machine just kept on drilling. Broke it. Went right around it. You got everything all within an eighth of an inch long. Put the saddles in.
